Ideas from the two weeks of work in March

Whew! Where to begin? I haven't had a moment to read the additions, so some of this may be redundant.

First some ideas that got tossed around after Jeff left on Sunday. We played with balcony scene and the longer we worked on it the more I feel that Romeo & Juliet seem to fit so naturally into clown.

We talked also about the idea of Romeo and Juliet being the only clowns in the piece and rest of the characters being commedia characters. I liked the idea of Romeo and Juliet finding each other and recognizing their need to be together because they've finally met someone that sees the world in a similar way.

Not sure if Mercutio is more a clown or commedia character. We spoke of possibility of him being a clown but older and world-weary. Idea came up of him wearing a grey nose instead of red. (As I write this, a clown with lost innocence seems to be contradictory and that Mercutio is probably more commedia.)

We talked of the idea of using parts of the texts in certain scenes, some specific lines here and there. Another idea that seemed pretty cool is the idea that the scenes with Romeo in Juliet be done with the text. So, their meeting, the balcony scene and the deaths be full text. I got really excited after this discussion because we had been reading the balcony scene a lot and I was thrilled about the thought of getting to say those words and work on some Shakespeare. (So, I may be a bit too giddy about that and need to let it go at this point.)

We played a bit more with just commedia characters and lazzi. David and Rich as Pantalone and Arlecchino were a hoot. Conor worked a bit on Tybalt and the duel scene with Mercutio. Rich was playing around with Mercutio as a Arlecchino charater and Conor was working with Tybalt as a Capitano. They did the duel as verbal sparing and then Conor kept pulling out more and more weapons. Rich countered each weapon with a food item (hungry Arlecchino). I stepped in as Romeo and tried to keep the peace (or at least refuse to fight Tybalt). With two such strong Zanni, I felt it more my job to build bridges between them. Assisting at whatever given "side" I felt I was on. Not sure if this is truly Romeo's inclination or my natural default to a two clown. It was fun to play.

We continually commented on how refreshing it was to have a ready scenario/story/reference to go back to when dry or lost.

These two weeks have just wetted my whistle to do more with everyone! This last week we only had Conor for one day and David for a couple. Realized it is just hard to do much with just two playing. Though improvising the balcony scene with Rich was great!

Ah, yes. We were really paying attention to the atmosphere in the balcony scene. Darkness, can't really see each other. We played it with an idea to discover comic bits. You know, tripping over shrubbery, benches, talking to someone who is actually behind you. Fun.

That's all I can remember tonight. Will add to this as sparks hit.

The Importance of Petrarch

Andrea was reading the play and some of Romeo and Juliet's verse reminded him of the poems of Petrarch. David helped him find the poems on the web and we printed some of them out. Andrea went through those and marked ones he felt were important or possibly helpful. I am jotting down the numbers of those sonnets and the title. If I can find the site David did I'll post that link here.

Laura is his Juliet. The pilgrim one reminds Andrea of Romeo's banishment from Verona.

The R&J Cast with Commedia Parallels

Hello! So finally I am getting to putting the notes I've taken and remember from the two weeks of play. This is a list of the cast with specific commedia character possibilities as discussed with Andrea, Jeff, David and Rich last Sunday.

How We Got This Idea

Uhhhhhh...

We, uh...

Okay. So in June 2007, David Z., Heather, Todd and I were sitting around discussing potential shows to collaborate with Italian artists on. For some reason, Shakespeare kept coming up in general discussions prior to that, with Italians and amongst ourselves. Romeo & Juliet in particular, actually. I wrote a little bit about why here.

I've been trying to remember who brought up a clown version, but I have no idea. No doubt it was related to the clown work Heather and I had been doing so much of late in some way. It tickled us, though. I remember David saying we should take a promo picture a la La Dolce Vita in Fontana di Trevi. We also got very excited about returning to that format, and tackling Shakespeare.

So essentially, the reasons we thought it was a perfect show to begin with had to do with the idea of finding something on which we collaborate with Italian theatre artists whilst in Italy. Someone told us Shakespeare productions were a very mixed bag there (as we saw in the contrast between productions of Othello [so bad] and Much Ado About Nothing [so good] there), and got to thinking about how language was going to be a constant issue in the collaboration. What better story than one set in Italy, to which we could add the original English language to at points, and one that pretty much everyone knows to one degree or another.

Because we kept trying to figure out how to bring Silent Lives to Italy, too, the appeal of clown work and how it can be very effective when silent (thus transcending all language issues) was great as well. Since then, as we've incorporated the idea into TNT's season and continued our informal explorations of the show, I think the main thing that has kept us going on the idea is how effectively it has gathered Zuppa del Giorno alumni. That's another thing we've been craving since Silent Lives: a reunion show. We kept trying to make space for it in other productions, but Romeo & Juliet seems to lend itself to that better than any before.

Finally, there's a lot about the show that resonates with themes Zuppa naturally inclines toward. Innocence and its loss, re-appreciation of old forms, passionate motivations and appetite-driven scenarios, and the more operatic side of comedy. In many ways, it was impossible that, once the idea was raised, we could let it go. So here we are, asking, "Now what?" Which is a place we can get pretty excited about.

What did I miss?

So, I'm curious how we got to the idea of clown R&J in the first place. Those who were there at conception, tell: how did the idea get hatched?

I had a great time working with Mark last week. Do we know if he is directing yet? Or will that not even be a possibility until David figures out which shows in the season he is directing? Did you all talk about this anymore last week?

My understanding of the commedia world is that it happens in a particular time & place.Did you start talking about what time and place that would be? If we are doing contemporary commedia, are we making any attempt to make this story relevant in a contemporary world?

A Little Girl Dreams Of Taking The Veil

I was reading the Queen Mab speech again and it keeps making me think of a collage-novel by Max Ernst called "A Little Girl Dreams Of Taking The Veil." They aren't really related, but they deal with many of the same themes: nightmares, innocence/loss of innocence, sex with a very young girl, a priest of questionable character, a bridegroom who leaves, violence.

I have a copy somewhere. If we ever unpack, I'll bring it around. I found a website where someone scanned in a few of the images. It doesn't tell the whole story-- but you'll get the flavor.

What I like about it is how nightmarish it is. I hope while we are looking for the comedy in R&J we don't let go of the danger and terror and ugliness. I think these things are important.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Follow your nose

Jeff -- I wrote this before your mask post, but lost internet connection and couldn't post. So, don't read it as a reply or critique, so much as a parallel thought.

I was watching "Blues Clues" and the characters were playing at being pigs. Instead of dressing up as pigs, they had very simple pig noses tied on with string. I thought--- hmm--- all of our characters could have noses tied on with string, whether they are red noses or commedia-style noses. In other words, the commedia characters would not have the full mask, only noses. It would give a more consistent look-- like one world, rather than merging two.

I believe (and this is just my opinion) that noses should be assigned based on whether the character is innocent and "with the tao" (i.e. a red nose) or trapped by desire (or other worldly trap), and "away from the tao" (i.e. a commedia-style nose).

If it is not clear from the text whether the character is innocent or not (I do not believe age is really a gauge, unless you are talking about under 2-- even 2 as a cuttoff point is debatable) then, I think that we could play to find out if a red nose "is sustainable" or not. BTW, here are two things that I learned in clown school (maybe other clown-school students learned different) : clowns cannot be archetypes and not all people (characters) have a clown.

[Digressive story: On the first day of class we all got up, one by one, to present ourselves to the master. He asked us each to do a few things and then told us to go away. One guy got up and the master looked at him and told him he had no clown -- that perhaps he had some other place in the theater, maybe some kind of romantic or action hero, he didn't know. He didn't throw the guy out (that was a different guy and a different story) but he basically said that, for him, clown school was a waste of time.]

That being said, what would it mean for Father Laurence to have no nose? That he is outside the world (e.g. the devil)? That he is spiritually deformed or maimed? Please discuss.

If we went with Dave's meta-route, I perhaps everyone starts in red-nose to tell the story and put commedia-style noses on top of the red nose to become characters. Maybe some of the clowns get trapped in their commedia-style nose? Like when we try-on things in our lives that, without our intending to, change us forever.

That's Italian. (Er: I hope.) I don't mean black gunk you put on your eyelashes; I mean masks.

We keep talking about "mask characters" for R&J, but I'm not entirely clear on whether or not we're actually diving into mask performance for this show or not. I would guess that we are, given how much we've been talking about masks lately, having an actually Italian actor working with us and the fact that a clown nose is itself a kind of mask. ("The mask that reveals," as Grey once quoted to us.) We may even get a nice dry run on mask performance from working on The Husband in August. That's another one for which I'm uncertain about whether or not we're using masks, but we keep talking about it being a traditional commedia dell'arte show, so . . .

If we are contemplating performing in mask, I think we should consider it very carefully. I'm specifically grateful, in fact, that we have a dry-run opportunity. We should learn a lot from it about how typical American audiences deal with it. We have certain cultural indicators that have told us that masked folks are not all bad -- The Lone Ranger, superheroes, etc. -- but by-and-large we're unaccustomed to them and find them threatening. It's similar to a subject I've been contemplating a bit lately: Clown fear. We fear the grotesque and unknown. God knows why. I've heard a million different explanations, and it's really all pretty moot to contemplate it here. It's just a fact.

I believe it's a fact we can overcome. Particularly watching Andrea's workshop last weekend, and the way everyone there loved performing in mask. It puts you into your body, and releases impulses (which may be part of why the Puritan in us runs screaming from them). It must be possible to transition from the current response of "Oh shit! A mask! Run!" to "Oh neat! A mask! I wonder what s/he'll do...?" This, at any rate, is how I imagine the response was in the time of commedia dell'arte. I suppose it was something similar to walking around the corner and finding someone doing really impressive breakdancing. Everybody loves to watch breakdancing.

What may be too much is to ask the average American to appreciate grotesque appearance. I've done some informal surveys, and though we as performers find them beautiful, a large quantity of folks these days have trouble appreciating traditional commedia masks. That blows, and I'd like to break them of it, but maybe we're forging enough new trails here as it is. Particularly when we're actively involving the audience in the way commedia and clown do. Zuppa has to confront that every show, sans mask, that initial defensiveness to having their fourth wall invaded. Add grotesque masks to the mix, particularly if they're dark leather or, say, riddled with warts, and I do believe you're asking a lot. "Holy shit! A seriously old man! Run!"

I could be (and often am) wrong. See above gratitude for having a potential dry run. Perhaps there's a finesse we can learn to working in mask similar to the sense we have of which audience members to involve in Zuppa antics in general. "Watch out for the four-year-old in the first row; she's a crier." "Thanks. Make sure you get the dude with the mustache at the end of six. He's my Dad, and into it."

But I also have an idea. (What? You, Jeff? It's true, and I will inflict it upon you. Wah-TA:) Just as we've approached commedia dell'arte as a "living tradition" all these years, perhaps the masks can be designed to be in the spirit of the originals, but responsive to our own century. My image of this -- though I also imagine the directions for this idea are limitless -- is of masks that take their features from the traditional masks, but filter them through some of the art and culture we're more accustomed to. Specifically, I wonder about more primary coloring and incorporating shapes at once more exaggerated and more basically geometric. (Anybody here seen Mirrormask? Totally stealing from it, I think.) The masks in my mind borrow a lot from cubism and technology (not technological function, but design). Bluetooth earpieces mask ears. Sunglasses mask eyes. Etc. Etc. The effect shouldn't be overt, but influenced by what we're accustomed to.

Take Arlecchino, for example.

If you use the traditional mask as a jumping-off point, there's already some basic geometry that jumps out at us. Circles for cheeks. Round eyes. Asymmetrical wart on the forehead. Arcing brows and pug nose. Maybe the contemporary mask borrows the colors of his traditionally patched costume, and is literally two circles on the cheeks, with arcing pieces rising out from them. Maybe the wart becomes a ball on a spring, or something more muted, like a barrette. This kind of image for me allows me to relax from the idea that someone is deceiving me, or mocking my appearance, and tells me immediately that their character is a scamp. It even rouses my curiosity. It's way more accessible for me than Picasso, at any rate.

Pantalone's Vice

I am so jealous that I can't be there playing with everyone today.

It seems to me, theoretically speaking, that there isn't a general problem with having clown types and commedia dell'arte types interacting. At first, I worried that the commedia types -- which seem very selfishly motivated and, at times, murderously intentful -- would overpower the clown types. The more I think about it, however, the more it seems to me that the commedianni would respond to the clowns in much the same way the older characters respond to the younger in the play: with misunderstanding, condescension or avoidance. The commedianni very quickly figure out that clowns will rarely give them what they want, so they may generally leave them alone.

The crux of the issue, I think, is in our relationship to the audience. Commedia dell'arte characters can very easily steal focus from a clown, to the detriment of both. But maybe it goes both ways; it's just that my clown isn't one for fighting for focus, I think. Then again, if there is less of an improvisational aspect to the show, we can make sure of a balance of attention. Either way, it is principal that we decide on our relationship to the audience. I'm perfectly content to allow this to come out of work and improvisation in the space. But. I also have opinions.

Dave spoke of a production (or two?) in which clowns were attempting to tell the story, and got wrapped up in it. I like this very much for its specificity, but am hesitant to apply it to this story. Romeo & Juliet seems to me to be a very pure narrative -- one which, in fact, has innocence and growth as a couple of dominant themes, and I worry that may be compromised by layers of meta-theatre. I admit I am a worrier by nature, but I also want the audience to have pure empathy for the characters, and don't want to muddle character identity with player identity. Perhaps it can't be helped when it comes to clown. Someone who knows what they're talking about on this front should smack me around a bit. Verbally, I mean.

That having been said, there's no denying that every style we work in acknowledges its audience. Commedia dell'arte seems founded upon Italians' love of telling personal stories to their neighbors. Clowns exist only for that rehearsal-absent, other player. Finally, Zuppa has always always always created shows that involve direct address and audience feedback. So what do we say about our audience this time? We began our first day (we: me, Heather, Andrea; David was a bit late) by walking about and imagining a piazza in Verona. I was crap at that, but it comes quite naturally to Andrea, and he quickly began to fill the space with sounds and life. We were imagining early morning, when the initial confrontation takes place in R&J, but I couldn't help but be reminded of the work with passagiata (sp?) we did when last we taught in Italy.

After the late meal, in small towns all over Italy, the custom is to leave the house and stroll about the center of town for hours, catching up with folks and seeing what's the what. This is passagiata, and we observed it for character research back in 2006, and imitated it in the rehearsal room to develop characters for our performances at the end of that trip. It was a great way to absorb the unique energies of the culture, a sort of relaxed Viewpoints approach. When I first entered a passagiata, my thinking was Okay, what do we do? Where are we going? How long does this last? By the end of the trip (and with a bit more Italian under my belt) I had learned a little better to enjoy it, to pass through groups and let what I heard affect me, rather than seeking purpose.

In the spirit of this, my feeling is that our relationship to the audience should be as one to townspeople with whom we are completely acquainted. The storytelling comes naturally, with the assumption that every person we address will naturally take our view of things. In the play itself, everyone knows one another. Indeed, the only thing which suggests otherwise is Juliet's questioning of who people are at the party, and this can be attributed to her debutante status and/or the fact that it's a masquerade ball. We are who we are, walking about the piazza, living every moment in the moment.

What Fun I Had

Here I am, back at my day job, thinking of nothing but the last week of play and exploration. Thanks, everyone, for your enthusiasm and time. David, Heather, Andrea and I all agreed that part of what was so energizing about this project was the way in which it seemed to draw so many talented people together, and I am full of gratitude in the afterglow.
How to summarize our week? Well, it can't be done, frankly. The sketchbook of my mind is full-up, y'all. Interestingly enough, at the same time I feel we have a clearer focus on what kind of show this wants to be. I write what it wants to be because after a week it has also become very clear to me that this story and the traditions we're inspired by have just as much to say about what they do as we might, and say it with the force of hundreds of years' practice behind them. That's not to say we can't be free with our materials. It is to say, however, that as usual the key will be in listening.
I'm going to summarize some ideas below. They are entirely subject to change, and it's entirely possible that I have interpreted some of them beyond what we agree on as a group, but we need to start the discussion somewhere. Agree, disagree, have at thee:
  • We want to incorporate the original language and Italian translations, as well as plenty of silent action. No talk yet of interpreting the poetry into contemporary vernacular, though we did just that in our improvisations on the text. Some discussion of possibly a narrator character (Friar Lawrence) and/or linguistic interpreter.

  • We've workshopped in clown style with Mark, commedia dell'arte with Andrea, and in free-style improvisation based on readings of the text. At the end of last week we were feeling inclined toward the characters of Romeo and Juliet being clowns in a world populated otherwise by commedia dell'arte mask characters, but we have also discussed: Mercutio being mercurial between clown/commedia; Lawrence having no mask or nose; all the younger characters being red-nose clowns; one family being clown, the other commedia; and all characters being clowns. There's much more to be explored about this.

  • The only set discussion thus far has been Andrea's suggestion that it be simple. (Personally, I'd like to include the bench that was in Noble Aspirations and Legal Snarls somehow.)

  • Dave G. discussed the show taking place in a kind of meta-reality, in which we're watching players (or pure clowns) trying to tell the story of Romeo & Juliet. David Z. returned often to the idea of the characters, be they self-aware or no, trying to keep their lives in the world of comedy and ultimately incapable of resisting the tragedy. Either way, there seems to be agreement about the show beginning with great humor and light, excited energy, and hanging on to that as long as possible before the tragedy takes over.

  • There's a strong theme of metamorphosis in our playing, particularly with regards to growing up or a loss of innocence.

We have not just ambiguities, but many questions:

  • How many people will we be working with? Who? How many of those will need to be trained?

  • Can commedia and clown characters coexist? If so, how?

  • When is this set? Where?

  • Will we change the story at all? If so, how?

  • How do we proceed from here?

These questions may resist answering until we come to the final rehearsal period, but it's good to consider and compile them as early as possible. We don't know what will come next, exactly, in terms of getting people working together in the same room again. That work continues some days this week with Andrea, Heather and David, and possibly Connor, Rich and whomever else can make it. There's some discussion of running commedia workshops for the community in May/June, which may include time to reconvene, and a reunion to work on a special production of the classic commedia scenario, The Husband, is just as sure as can be happening in August.

Benedicite!

Welcome to the friar's cell. Here is where we will continue the collaboration begun at The Northeast Theatre in March of 2008, under the auspices of their contemporary commedia dell'arte troupe, Zuppa del Giorno. In case you haven't been a member of a 'blog before, look here for how we used one to collaborate on Prohibitive Standards prior to beginning rehearsal.
The basics:
  1. Sign in as a contributor to the 'blog using your Google account name and password.
  2. Create a "post" (an entry) on some aspect of the show you wish to share information or ideas on. You can include pictures and videos in a given post, or simply text, depending upon your level of ease with the Blogger website.
  3. When you have finished your post, be sure to label it with applicable categories. Every time you add a new category, it joins a list of categories by which we can search for entries. So, for example, this post will be labeled "logistics." In the future, if you need to find an entry regarding some practical aspect of the show, you can click on the "logistics" category in the sidebar and see all relevant entries. (Blogger also allows you to search the whole 'blog using a search engine.)
  4. Every visit, take time to read others' entries and "comment" upon them. A "comment" will join a chain of responses, or a conversation, attached to a particular post. If you find you have A LOT to say in response, it may be best to leave a comment such as "See my entry in response, dated _______."

Those are the basics, but feel free to play around once you understand the simpler aspects of using Blogger. Remember that you can always save an entry and not post it yet if it isn't ready, and that even after you post one, you can still go back and edit it. And have fun! It's an amazing opportunity to collaborate on a show for a whole year, even when we're across the world from one another.
